Singapore's OK Campaign

As part of Singapore’s continued vigilance against the spread of infectious diseases, the National Environment Agency, on 1 May 2009, re-launched the Singapore's OK (SOK) campaign to reinforce the commitment of stakeholders to raise the standards of hygiene.

The programme aims to drive home the messages that everyone has a part to play in keeping our environment clean and hygienic. It will be rolled out progressively, starting with hawker centres and markets, food shops and toilets due to their high levels of human traffic.

As part of its aim to promote a more concerted effort by the key stakeholders of such premises, the SOK status will only be given to premises where main stakeholders such as management, cleaners and stallholders are all undertaking their specific roles in keeping the premises clean and hygienic. All participating outlets will be inspected before SOK decals are awarded to them. The SOK Criteria for the various categories are as follows:

In addition, NEA will also embark on an effort to raise the standards of hygiene in public premises with various industry and community stakeholders by stepping up cleaning and disinfection of public premises. These efforts include bringing forward the spring cleaning programme for hawker centres and markets which have yet to do so this year; stepping up cleansing frequency in common areas with high human traffic e.g. Bugis, Chinatown, Geylang, Little India and Orchard Road; issuing advisories to building managements to use disinfectants for cleaning of common surfaces (e.g. door handles, table tops, escalator hand rails) and engaging Town Councils and relevant associations (e.g. EMAS, REDAS) to encourage their members to step up their cleaning regimes.

For dormitories, pre-schools, and construction sites, NEA will be working with the various agencies and stakeholders to extend the SOK programme to these premises. Stakeholders are encouraged to adopt the following practises:

The NEA encourages operators and management to work with its hygiene officers to come aboard the programme. The responsibility of keeping premises clean and hygienic, however, does not just rest with the operators, management and cleaners. The public also plays an important role. Only by working together can Singapore continue to have clean and hygienic public premises.
