The Climate of Cambodia

Cambodia is one of the small er countries in Indochina. The southwestern part of the country is hilly and the coastal area facing the Gulf of Siam has high rainfall. The remainder of Cambodia is low-lying with lower rainfall. As with the rest of Indochina, Cambodia's weather is influenced by the Asian monsoon.

The north monsoon coincides with the dry season from Dec-Apr, when there is hot and sunny weather with about 7-8 hours of sunshine a day. The south monsoon (end May-Oct) brings the rainy season with cloudier skies, high humidity which makes conditions rather sultry and uncomfortable. There is a transition period between the two monsoon seasons when winds are light and variable. In the lowlands, temperatures are high all year round. The high humidity and temperatures may cause some slight heat stress but generally this is not severe.

Once in a while, a typhoon from the South China Sea or Gulf of Siam may cross over land and affect the country. When this happens, these storms bring strong winds and torrential rain.
