The Climate of Philippines
The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7000 islands in the western Pacific situated between 4 and 21 degrees north. The largest islands, such as Luzon and Mindanao, are mountainous and have very indented coastlines so that the country has a rugged and confused relief. The mountain ranges may rise from 6000-10000ft (1800-3000m).
The southern islands have a more equatorial climate, ie. with high rainfall all year round. The central and northern islands have a tropical monsoon type of climate, with a single season of heavy rain. The rainy season is from July-October when winds are southwesterly to southeasterly.
Much of the rainfall comes from typhoons, which develop over the Pacific Ocean, and move westward across the Philippines into the South China Sea. These typhoons produce very high wind speeds and torrential rain.Several typhoons usually affect some part of the Philippines every year, the more intense ones causing widespread damage and loss of life through flooding and landslides. Annual rainfall in the Philippines is over 1000mm almost everywhere. It is heavier where warm, damp Pacific air is forced to rise over coastal mountains, often exceeding 4000 - 5000mm. Coasts facing northeast are exposed to the Pacific trade winds between November and March and these areas have their heaviest rainfall at this time
