The Climate of Taiwan
The island of Taiwan lies just off the coast of China. It is a mountainous country, with peaks reaching to over 13000ft (4000m). The whole island has the same tropical monsoon type of climate found on the southern Chinese mainland. In the lowlands, rainfall reaches up to 2000mm per year, while in the mountains rainfall is even higher.
The period May- Sept receives more rain than the rest of the year. A large percentage of this comes from typhoons which move in from the South China Sea, bringing very strong winds and torrential rain to the entire island. In the summer, the heat can be quite oppressive due to high humidity so that some days can be rather uncomfortable. The weather in spring tends to be more pleasant. In the winter months, unsettled weather with cloud and rain tends to affect the northern and eastern coasts more than the south. The north of the island has a cooler winter than the south.
Taiwan is sunny for most of the year; in the winter sunshine hours average about 6 hours a day and about 7-8 in summer. These amounts are much reduced in the cloudier, wetter hills.
