WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR SINGAPORE
16 - 31 May 2013

[ Review | Weather Outlook | Statistics ]

REVIEW 1 - 14 May 2013
1. Inter-Monsoon conditions prevailed during the first fortnight of May 2013, with the low level winds over the region generally light and variable in direction. The combination of strong daytime heating and drier weather conditions towards the middle of the month led to warmer temperatures.

2. During the review period, Singapore experienced thundery showers mostly in the afternoon, and in the late morning and early afternoon on a few days. The heaviest downpour was in the late afternoon of 7 May 2013 where 86.6 mm of rain fell over Yishun as a result of a combination of strong convection and local sea-breeze convergence. This heavy rain episode resulted in flash floods over northern and central parts of Singapore.

3. For the first fortnight of May 2013, about two-thirds of the island received above average rainfall. The highest rainfall of 210 mm to 250 mm (170 to 220% above average) fell over the north-western parts of Singapore around Seletar. Rainfall was lowest over southeastern parts of Singapore near Katong, where 15 mm to 45 mm (40 to 80% below average) of rain was recorded.

Weather Outlook: 16 - 31 May 2013

  1. For the next fortnight, inter-Monsoon conditions will continue to prevail with the low level winds blowing predominantly from the southeast or southwest.

  2. During this period, Singapore can expect short-duration thundery showers mainly in the late morning and afternoon on 5 to 6 days. The showers can be heavy at times, especially when there is convergence of winds coupled with strong solar heating. In addition, widespread showers with gusty winds are likely in the predawn hours and morning on 1 to 2 days.

  3. Rainfall for May 2013 is likely to be average to slightly above average.
