Students Embrace Litter-Free (SELF) Programme (Outside Schools)

  •    On 6 June 2010, NEA launched a refreshed anti-littering campaign, using an integrated approach of stricter enforcement, better litter bin Infrastructure and more targeted Outreach and Education to tackle the issue of littering. A key component of the Outreach and Education component is to promote greater ownership of community spaces.

  •    In support of the new campaign, NEA enhanced the LFS Programme by introducing the SELF Programme (Outside Schools). Under the SELF Programme (Outside Schools), students will conduct clean-up activities outside of their school premises and/ or adopt the community space outside of their school, to keep it clean and beautiful.

  •    The SELF Programme (Outside Schools) focuses on engaging students to take greater personal ownership and responsibility for the environment, not only within, but also beyond the school premises, and to understand how acts of graciousness, such as keeping public places clean, can result in a pleasant living environment for all.

  •    Structured Teacher's Guide and Student's Activity Sheet has been developed to assist teachers in carrying out the activities under the SELF Programme (Outside Schools) and reinforce learning points for students through the activities. [Schools have to sign up for the SELF Programme (Outside Schools); a link will then be sent in the auto reply for you to download the Activity Sheet.].

  •    Clean Up of Public Places: Schools will be encouraged to organise clean-up activities in public places such as parks, stadiums, sporting venues, beaches and etc at least 2 times per year, once in every semester for their students. One of the cleanups must be at the beach, and the other at another public place. Participating schools will be recognised for their efforts after at least 2 clean ups per year.

  •    Adoption of Schools' Surroundings: Schools will adopt the schools' surroundings such as walkways and bus stops outside the schools. Students will be scheduled to carry out regular litter patrol to pick up visible litter, report cleanliness lapses such as overflow of litterbin to the relevant authorities, recognise good behaviour of their fellow school mates, and etc. at least once a term. Students may post photos and what they did to set an example in keeping the school and the surroundings clean into the CGS Facebook. Participating schools will be recognised for their commitment to adopt the school surroundings.
