Weather Services Department
The Weather Services Department provides meteorological services to key customers, including the general public, and operational specialised users such as the aviation and shipping industries and the military. It also houses the Systems and Communications unit which provides critical IT support for operations.
Public Weather Services cover a wide spectrum of meteorological services to the general public and specific private and public sector organisations. These include the provision of short-range nowcasts to longer-range local weather forecasts, international cities forecasts, regional wind, weather and haze conditions, and earthquake and tsunami information. These services are provided through the print media, radio and TV, as well as on our website, hotline (6542 7788) and Telcos partner. The department also offers weather consultancies in support of national and civil emergencies. Special weather watch services and forecasts are also provided to government departments and agencies for important events and in disaster mitigation.
Aviation Weather Services are used by airlines, flight crew members, and Civil Aviation Authority which include air traffic services units, search and rescue units, airport management and others to enhance the safety and efficiency of international air operations. Aviation flight forecasts are used by airlines to perform flight planning to achieve greater operational efficiency and minimise fuel consumption. Most of the requirements and specifications of aviation weather services are determined in accordance with the provisions of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Convention. To facilitate easy access to services, an Aviation Intranet Service on subscription basis has been offered to all operators based in Singapore.
Marine Weather Services are provided to support the safety and economy of coastal and international sea navigation, thereby contributing to the attractiveness of Singapore as a maritime hub. Services are provided as part of Singapore's international obligation under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), in addition to the requirements of specific users in the marine and shipping industries. A one-stop online Shipping Intranet Service has been implemented for marine and shipping communities to gain convenient access to weather information.
Military Weather Services include specialised support to MINDEF and SAF in their daily operations and exercises, thereby contributing to the defence and security of Singapore, as well as to the safety of officers during training. Services provided include dedicated support at the aerodrome and naval bases, and lightning risk forecast for ground troops.
The Systems & Communications unit plans and manages the operationalisation of IT and communication systems for the reception, generation and dissemination of meteorological products to meet the specialised requirements of various user groups. The units also manage the maintenance and replacement of computing resources and an array of specialised meteorological equipment such as the Weather Information Dissemination System, doppler weather radar system, seismic monitoring network, satellite processing and reception systems to maintain high system and product availability to internal and external users. The unit also plans and implements enhancements and new systems to help develop new capabilities for the Division such as the tsunami early warning system, automation of warnings via SMS, and implementation of cost-effective open system for weather data processing.
In the regional and international co-operation arena, the department participates in the activities of the world's meteorological community in areas such as world weather watch, severe weather surveillance, climate monitoring and environment emergency response such as regional forest fires and transboundary haze monitoring, and earthquake induced tremors and tsunami monitoring.
