Environmental Planning
Singapore’s limited land area, rapid industrialization and expanding population necessitate careful planning to ensure a quality living environment for all residents and visitors to Singapore.
NEA is responsible for environmental planning in Singapore. NEA is consulted by the planning and development authorities on development proposals. NEA assesses the impact of all developments on the environment and ensures that environmental factors are incorporated into landuse planning, development and building control of new developments so that they are properly sited and compatible with surrounding landuse, and minimise pollution to the environment.
NEA screens new industries to ensure that they will not pose unmanageable health and safety hazards, and pollution problems in Singapore. A proposed industry will be allowed only if emissions of pollutants can comply with standards, hazardous substances and wastes can be safely managed and properly disposed of, and the factory can be sited in a suitable industrial estate.
NEA’s careful environmental planning has resulted in Singapore’s orderly development and a quality living environment for generations to come.
