Vector Control
NEA is responsible for minimising the incidence of vector-borne diseases in Singapore. This is achieved through an evidence based integrated vector management system, complemented by education, enforcement and continuous research.
NEA is also responsible for the regulation of pesticides and vector control services in Singapore.
Vectors
Vectors are organisms that transmit diseases. The five main vectors in Singapore and the diseases that they could transmit are:
| S/N |
Vector |

-
Salmonellosis
-
Dysentery |
Surveillance
NEA has a surveillance programme in place to monitor the activity of vector populations and the emergence of vector-borne diseases. By monitoring the spatial and temporal distribution of their activity, preventive and control measures can be put in place to reduce the impact of any vector-borne disease outbreaks.
Education
Ongoing public education efforts are part of NEA’s strategy to limit the impact of vector-borne diseases in Singapore. The public education campaign plays an important role in educating the public on the dangers of dengue and the daily measures they can take to minimize the risk of dengue outbreaks.
Enforcement
NEA regularly carries out inspections of residential and commercial premises to control vectors and the conditions that lead to their spread. Fines and other penalties can be levied where lapses are found.
Research
NEA conducts operationally relevant applied research to better understand the factors contributing to disease outbreaks. These include:
- Geographic information system for tracking vector distribution
- Dynamics of vector population in disease outbreaks
- Diagnostic tools for the detection of vector-borne diseases
- Biochemical tools for monitoring insecticide resistance
- Evaluation of insecticides and vector control tools
- Epidemiology study of the disease

Regulation of Pesticides and Vector Control Services
NEA carries out the licensing of Operators (Pest Control Companies), Technicians and Workers in the vector control industry and also the licensing of pesticides for use in vector control. NEA also works closely with the industry to improve the standards of vector control services carried out in Singapore and regularly conducts dialogue sessions to share best practices on vector control.
